What needs cleaning?

Why we ask: So we send the right crew with the right checklist - a move-out is twice the work of a standard clean.

Ottawa Cleaning Co. provides professional house cleaning throughout Almonte, Ontario.

Almonte is the only place we serve where the municipality has written down, in its own engineering report, that the water is hard. It is also the only one where a meaningful number of homes are lofts inside nineteenth-century woollen mills. Both facts change how a house here gets cleaned, and neither of them applies twenty minutes down the road.

Hard water in Almonte and what it leaves behind

Mississippi Mills' own Class Environmental Assessment states that groundwater wells are known to produce water with elevated levels of hardness, as seen in the existing Almonte wells, and that some water users in the Almonte system use water softeners to treat it. The system is five drilled wells built between 1948 and 1991, 38 to 79 metres deep, into the Nepean Sandstone aquifer, chlorinated only - no filtration, no softening. Published alkalinity runs 281 to 301 mg/L. It serves Almonte Ward alone, roughly 5,350 of the municipality's 14,740 residents.

Cleaning converted mill lofts: exposed stone, beams and deep sills

The Rosamond Woollen Mill is a National Historic Site of Canada, designated 16 June 1986, built in 1866, six storeys, with limestone exterior walls. Conversion into residential condominiums began in 1987, and Parks Canada now records its function as residence and multiple dwelling. The Victoria Woollen Mill of 1857, the Thoburn Mill, the Almonte Flour Mill and the Mississippi Iron Works have all been adaptively re-used as well.

  • Exposed stone and brick dusted dry, never saturated
  • Timber beams and overhead ledges reached properly
  • Deep masonry window sills and reveals
  • Open-plan floors done in one pass rather than room by room

Downtown Almonte's Heritage Conservation District

The Downtown Almonte Heritage Conservation District was adopted under Part V of the Ontario Heritage Act on 28 June 2016 by By-law 16-61, covering both sides of Mill Street, Little Bridge Street, parts of Bridge and Almonte Streets, Main Street West on Coleman Island, Main Street East and all of Union Street South. There are 41 Part IV designated properties and the municipality counts over 175 designated and listed properties in total.

Pre-1961 stone and brick homes

About 33.2% of Almonte's dwellings predate 1961. The district plan describes an Almonte or Lanark style running from the 1860s to the 1900s, built in locally quarried stone with contrasting dark, rough-faced quoins and window surrounds set against lighter stone walls. Interiors that go with those exteriors - plaster, deep trim, original hardwood - want dry methods and controlled moisture, not a wet mop.

Lighter recurring service for smaller and senior households

The median age in Almonte is 53.2, 31.5% of residents are 65 or older, and 72.9% of households are one or two people. Single-detached homes make up only 61.5% of the stock. A full four-hour visit is often more than the house needs, so we schedule shorter recurring visits at a lower flat rate rather than selling hours nobody uses.

New builds at Mill Run and Riverfront Estates

Almonte has been running about 136 housing starts a year, with Mill Run and Riverfront Estates alongside 430 Ottawa Street at 124 units and Mill Valley Living at 66. Forecasts take the ward from 6,374 residents in 2022 to 13,550 by 2048. New homes here get a post-construction first clean before anything recurring starts.

FAQs

Almonte questions about water, heritage and scheduling

Don't see your question? Text or call us - we usually reply in under an hour.

Why is there scale on my shower glass and kettle?
Almonte's five wells draw the Nepean Sandstone aquifer and the municipality's own environmental assessment records elevated hardness in them. Chlorination is the only treatment - there is no softening at the plant - so minerals arrive at your taps and stay behind when water evaporates.
Do you clean loft condos in the old mills?
Yes. Exposed stone gets dusted dry rather than saturated, beams and high ledges are reached with poles rather than skipped, and deep masonry sills are done properly. Open-plan lofts are quoted by floor area.
Do I need a heritage permit for anything you do?
No. A Heritage Permit is required for alterations to property in the Downtown Almonte Heritage Conservation District. Cleaning is not an alteration. If a surface looks fragile we will tell you and leave it rather than experiment on it.
Do you offer smaller recurring visits?
Yes - 72.9% of Almonte households are one or two people, and a shorter visit at a lower flat rate is usually the right fit. We agree the scope in advance so you are not paying for rooms that never get used.
